DRAWING PREPARATION / 20 OCTOBER 2026
Rename construction drawing PDFs by sheet number.
When a takeoff tool needs one PDF per sheet, splitting a plan set is only half the job. You still need names such as A-101 rather than page_47. A title-block reader can recover those identifiers from a repeated region, but every read needs checking.
No signup or payment. Proposed full edition: $149 once, not yet on sale. No takeoff-tool integration has been independently tested.
Start with the tool you already have.
- Only need separate files? PDFsam Basic offers free page extraction. A title-block reader is unnecessary if the filenames do not matter.
- Need drawing numbers and named pages? Try the free OpenTools Drawing Register first. It includes named sheet bursting.
- Already pay for a PDF editor? Check its region-based page-label and extract-by-label options before adding another tool.
Rowframe is a small browser workbench for sets where choosing the exact reading region still matters. Use the five-page pilot to check whether it removes your renaming step. The proposed $149 one-user edition raises the per-run limit to 300 selected pages.
Read one repeated title block, then review the names.
- Keep the original. Open an authorised, unsigned static PDF. The pilot accepts up to 150 MB and 1,000 source pages; encrypted PDFs, interactive forms and signed documents are refused.
- Choose the number region. Preview a representative drawing, rotate the reading view if needed, and draw tightly around the sheet number. Use one repeated title-block layout per run.
- Select up to five pages. Use selectable text for a digital PDF, or English OCR for a scan. Different title blocks need separate runs.
- Check every result. Use View to compare the number with its source. Correct a wrong read or exclude the page. Duplicate numbers and low OCR scores require attention.
- Download and inspect the ZIP. It contains one original-page PDF per included sheet, a
register.csvlinking each output to its source page, and processing notes.
A filename should still lead back to its source.
0047_A-101.pdf identifies source page 47. That prefix prevents two pages labelled A-101 from overwriting each other. It does not tell you which revision is current. Output copies each original page and its orientation; document-level bookmarks, signatures, metadata and cross-document links are not preserved.
What we have actually checked.
Our internal spot check covered eight selected pages from two public drawing sets: five digital pages from Ann Arbor RFP 25-30 and three scanned pages from the City of Barnwell project document. After setting the reading region and, for the scan, rotating the view, the eight identifiers matched the expected values. The scanned reads still showed low-confidence warnings.
This was a limited development check, not independent customer testing, a general accuracy score or evidence of time saved. Your set may fail. Complex pages can exceed browser memory. Drawings stay in tab memory; loading this site and its OCR assets requires internet.
Did the free tools already finish the job?
If they did, keep using them. If a few authorised pages still need manual renaming, try the pilot and tell us the exact step that remains. Include your OS, sheets per set, current tool, the free alternative tried and whether the proposed $149 edition would solve a remaining task. Do not send confidential drawings or license keys.
